Introduction

Do you have problems understanding Australians? Informal Australian English can be rather colourful and challenging for a newcomer to understand. But do not fear, the Australian English Slang & Idioms Dictionary is here!

See below for words and phrases you will commonly hear in Australia. I have thrown in a few obscure and very colourful examples as well.

Many of the slang and idiom examples below are dinky-di (authentically Australian), and you are unlikely to hear them anywhere else but Australia. However, many also originate from the UK or USA and are commonly used in Australia.

You can also test your knowledge with Australian Slang & Idioms Flashcards.
